Your Step-By-Step Guide to Adjusting a Sliding Glass Door

It’s a general rule that doors need regular maintenance to ensure their longevity and optimal performance. Your sliding glass door is no exception to this rule. After all, a door is one of your home’s first line of defense no matter what style it is.

Eventually, however, it becomes harder to open your sliding glass door. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean you have to call a professional right away to replace it. It may still be possible to adjust and fix it on your own.

In this post, Renewal by Andersen® of Dallas/Fort Worth gives you a step-by-step guide to properly adjust your sliding glass door.

Clean the Door Track

Your sliding glass door is attached to a track that it rolls upon when you open or close it. Over time, however, this track accumulates dirt and grime, hindering normal operation. To remove it, use an old toothbrush or wire brush to clean the track. Once you’ve cleared the track of dirt, you can use a vacuum cleaner to remove whatever you might have missed.

Lubricate the Track

The next step when adjusting your sliding doors is to lubricate the track. Any silicone spray will do, but avoid using WD-40 as it can trap dirt. Wipe off any overspray that lands on the floor or it will create a slippery surface that can be hazardous. You can also clean the track at the same time so the track won’t get dirty right away.

Adjust Sliding Glass Door Rollers

If your door is still sticking despite cleaning and lubricating the track, it’s possible that the door’s alignment is off. Your sliding door has adjustable rollers that can easily fix this. If these rollers are concealed by plugs, you can use a steak knife to remove them.

Once you’ve removed the plugs, you can use a screwdriver to adjust the screw. This will move your roller’s height up or down, which also causes the sliding door’s height to adjust. Keep adjusting the screws until you determine the correct height that allows the door to glide better.
